Champ Kart

TECH BULLETIN (4/25/2023): Fuel (87 octane w/ ethanol) must be purchased from the Exxon/Friendly Mart gas station at 4981 Richlands Hwy (closest gas station to the speedway). Racers will be required to bring a receipt as proof of purchase.


Make note that these rules are in addition to the New River All-American Speedway General rules that apply to all drivers and crews and for all race classes. The intent of these rules is to help provide fair and safe racing to the fullest extent possible.

1.  General

  1. All karts must meet all WKA Senior Champ specifications.
  2. No modifications allowed to frame, nerf bars, side protection Bars, Front spindle or rear axle locations.
  3. Minimum total weight for both Kart and driver will be 425 pounds.
  4. Drivers who have raced for a year or less must do a minimum of 40 laps of practice, either as a track rental, open practice, or during race day, for approval to race.
  5. Drivers who have not raced at New River All-American Speedway (dating back to July 31, 2021) must also do a minimum of 40 laps of practice for approval.

2.  Kart Safety

  1. Weight must be attached to the welded frame tabs, driver’s seat or frame clamps designed to mount weight.  A minimum of a 5/16 inch bolt (grade 5 or 8) must be used to mount weight. Bolts must have nylon lock nuts or be double nutted.  If the weight is above 7 lbs., it needs to use a 3/8 inch bolt double nutted and all bolts must be drilled and have cotter pins in them.
  2. All steering component hardware must be drilled and safety wired or secured with a cotter key or locking clip.
  3. Steering wheels must be mounted with quick release hub designed for the purpose.
  4. Wolf plates must be used to protect driver from brake rotor failure when mounted on left side of axle.
  5. A racing style 5-point safety harness (seat belt) must be used to secure driver. 2 inch belts are acceptable for drivers weighing 150 pounds or less. A 3 inch is recommended, but not required, for drivers over 150 pounds. All hardware securing the drivers safety belts shall be a minimum of grade 8 for 5/16 inch and grade 5 for 3/8 inch and larger. Bolts must be secured with nylon lock nuts or drilled and secured with safety wire or cotter key.
  6. Kart must have a left side “Sprint Car Cage net” properly installed.
  7. Karts must have a mirror on the left side, in the driver’s view, in race position. The mirror may not be mounted to the top of the cage. Right-side mirrors are permitted, but not mandatory.

3.  Driver Safety

  1. All drivers must wear a full face helmet with a Snell rating of M2005 or newer.
  2. A racing type helmet support or neck brace is required. Hans type of device is optional.
  3. Firesuit, fire-retardent gloves and shoes, and sprint car window nets are mandatory. Window nets must be installed properly.
  4. Arm restraints are recommended.

4.  Tires

a.       5 or 6 inch diameter wheels with tires manufactured and designed for Kart racing are required.

b.       Make and manufacturer are open.

5.  Engine

a.   All Champ Karts are required to run a Briggs and Stratton Animal, LO 206 sealed crate engine.

b.  Engine chain guards are required.

c. All engine rules for the year 2021 written for the LO 206 engine and posted by Briggs and Stratton will apply. Clone 2021 NKA Clone Engine may also be run.

The New River All-American SpeedwayChamp Kart class will allow the following exceptions…

Rule 9.  Engine air filter.  A filter is required. Make and style is open.

Rule 14.  Carb. overflow catch container is not required.

Rule 15.  Fuel pump pulse from intake manifold is allowed. Line must be dedicated and unbroken between intake fitting and pump.

Rule 30.   Spark plug rule is open to any make spark plug.

Rule 31 and 32.  Clutch rule is open to any make centrifugal type, racing clutch.

Rule 34.  Any header made for an animal or LO206 is acceptable.

Rule 35.  Silencers are optional.

New Engine claim rule for the Briggs and Stratton Local 206 and clone motor for New River All-American Speedway.

A $650.00 cash, Engine claim rule is now implemented for the 2023 season. The intent is to preserve the purpose of the engine. These are low cost, reliability and evenly matched competition as the engine is concerned.

A verbal claim request must be made within 30 minutes of the end of the race to a race director or track official. Verification of the funds will be made.

The owner or driver of the Kart engine being claimed will be notified and will have one hour to remove and surrender the engine for the claim funds. The removal of the engine shall be in plain view of witnesses.

These parts are not to be included with the engine. Engine mount, exhaust header, chain guard, clutch, air filter and throttle linkage.

Race Procedure

  1. Aggressive driving will not be tolerated. Aggressive or rough driving will result in a driver being parked, along with possible additional penalties.
  2. If a driver hits another kart hard enough to cause a flip or rollover, that driver will be parked.
  3. Qualifying for Champ Karts will be group qualifying, five karts at a time. The first two laps will be pace laps to test transponders, followed by at-speed laps. Time will be set aside in race schedules for Champ Kart qualifying – separate from practice.

Spotters

Spotters are permitted and strongly encouraged. Race teams must monitor race control (frequency: 466.7875). If a driver does not have a spotter, they are encouraged to purchase a Raceceiver or similar device (which can be purchased through Racing Electronics) and program the device to race control frequency.

Spotters must be on the designated spotter’s stand above the frontstretch tower whenever their assigned kart is on track.

PROTESTS

Champ Kart Protest Rules

  • To Protest another Champ Kart’s Engine – $150.00
    • If Driver being Protested accepts, Protested Driver adds an additional $50.00 – for a total of $200.00
    • A protest can only be filed on a car that finished one (1) position ahead of the driver wishing to file a protest.
