JACKSONVILLE, NC – George Phillips picked up his first career Pro Late Model win in Friday night’s The Angry Ginger Irish Pub 207 at New River All-American Speedway.
The 14-year-old from Charlotte took the lead from Virginia’s Tristan McKee, who was suffering from mechanical problems, on the 15th lap of the 100-lap race and never looked back. He was able to hold off Beckham Malone and Chase Singletary to score his first career win in the Carolina Pro Late Model Series.
“It was so much fun. Most of all, I want to thank God, as well as Setzer Racing Development, Brandon and Dennis Setzer, [and everyone on the team],” Phillips said in victory lane, while also thanking his sponsors and family. “It’s been an amazing night and I love racing at New River All-American Speedway. It’s so nice to get my first Carolina Pro win here.”
Phillips had two prior wins at New River, both in a Legend Car. He would go on to sweep the weekend in the Carolina Pro Late Model Series, scoring a victory at Carteret County Speedway on Saturday evening.
Eddie Humphrey made a late race pass on Hunter Brown to pick up the Swansboro Liquidations Bomber feature victory – his first win in the 2023 NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series season. Brown went on to finish second while Robert Drum picked up a third place finish.
“This was fun,” Humphrey said. “It’s hard to do when you’re trying to stay under a certain lap time. It makes it so difficult. [Amanda]’s in my ear telling me my lap times each lap. That’s all the help you really got. My goodness, first win in 2023. So happy. Thank all my fans and sponsors. This is good. I’m happy.”
Josh Eubanks picked up his second win of the season in the Champ Kart division, while Curtis Lanier held off Abby Jolly in U-CAR competition and Jack Baldwin was victorious in the Carolina Crate Modified Series feature.
The next race at New River All-American Speedway will be the School’s Out Shootout on Saturday, June 17, 2023 featuring twin races for Late Models, Bandoleros, Bombers, Champ Karts, Legends and U-CARs.
